The picture, now slightly dated, is of me with my great aunt and uncle, Rose and Len—along with a more distant relation. Rose and Len bought me some of my first books, taught me to play chess, and patiently encouraged my endless questioning. Len, an economist, helped to start UC Santa Cruz when it was still a radical educational experiment and was subsequently denied tenure after being blacklisted by Ronald Reagan for his Marxist sympathies. Total badasses both.
